Dear reader, you must be wondering, what will this blog be about? Is this yet another set of online ramblings by a 20-something girl? Is this yet another purported fashion blog? Is there even going to be intelligible discussion?
Oh reader, you pose such good questions. Might I interest you in some background?
Who is The Fashionomist?
The Fashionomist is a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago pursuing a Master's degree in Economics. She is, to put it simply, a fashion freak. She has a definite sense of style and finds fashion to be an intriguing blend of art and science. She has always been interested in the means by which people express themselves and put outfits together as reflections of their personality. The Fashionomist, one might say, is both a fashionable economist and an economist of fashion.
What is The Fashionomist?
The Fashionomist is a blog combining fashion and economics. The idea for the blog came while The Fashionomist was discussing New York Fashion Week one Friday morning over cereal with her roommate. The Fashionomist is an applied economist at heart, and found the underlying economics driving fashion trends an exciting, fascinating subject.
Why The Fashionomist blog?
The Fashionomist had long been a fan of procrastinating between projects/term papers/exam studying/other scholarly pursuits by gazing at fashion blogs, but had never run across a blog dedicated to the economics of fashion. In fact, most fashion blogs tend to be online lookbooks or (not-so) hidden lenses into someone's closet. Indeed, independent research turned up few leads on this subject.
What are the goals of The Fashionomist?
The Fashionomist hopes to create an accessible blog approachably analyzing the economics of fashion. Beyond being an outlet for a creative mind, The Fashionomist would like to ideally provide up-to-the minute information about the economic undercurrents of fashion. As the motto states, my objective is to dismiss the popular notion of economics as a dismal science and fashion as a flight of fancy. The economics of fashion is an integral aspect of the modern economy, and The Fashionomist hopes to convey this sense through her blog.
Where can I drop my 2 cents?
The Fashionomist aims to please. Comments/constructive criticism/praise/rotten tomatoes/tips are more than welcome anytime. This is a work in progress, and The Fashionomist is a perfectionist by nature, so any and all feedback is much appreciated in developing this blog.
Welcome! Posts begin tomorrow - a graduate student cannot commit to daily posts but The Fashionomist will promise to post frequently.

This reader has a (hopefully) good question...how does one phonetically pronounce fashionomist? She seems to be adding an extra synonym. Also, she is excited for upcoming posts!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thank you for the comment!
ReplyDeleteAh, the pronunciation issue. Yes, that has been something that has been thought of into the wee hours of night. Pronouncing the "fashion" part makes the author sound fascist, and a political statement is not what she intends. As such, she hopes that the word can be pronounced much like "The Economist" is, therefore being: The Fash-on-uh-mist (a stronger emphasis on the first syllable).
I love the fact that I made it into the blog! And I'm really glad that all our little study breaks of looking at shoes and purses and magazines for motivation to keep studying have had a fruitful turn out! Good luck my roomie! I love it already!
